I can’t really express in words what a change C41 home development is for me. I’m still sort of in awe and feeling like alchemist even though I know that developing your own color film at home isn’t really ground breaking and that people have been doing it probably for about as long as color film has been around. Still, it’s opened up a really big door for me and given me a new inspiration to go out and shoot. It’s also allowed me to finally clear some of my back log of film and and that’s brought back a flood of memories. As I’ve gotten more experience and my tastes and style has developed my photos have felt a little boring and uninspired. Looking back at some of the old work I’ve done it reminded me of how liberated I felt when I first started working with toy and vintage cameras. Everything was new and exciting and a little unpredictable. Right now I have that feeling again since working in color is now an option. It’s always been an option I guess, I mean I used to shoot color film a lot before digital cameras were around, but I always felt cut off from the process and at the mercy of someone else’s tastes. And then when photo labs started going away and developing color film got really expensive and a major pain in the ass I just figured I wouldn’t shoot color film anymore. Turns out I really like shooting color film. Who knew. Anyway, today I managed to process 5 rolls of film, still have more to go, but it’s progress. Here are some of my favorites so far…
I love the old time look of this one. If it wasn’t for the modern cars this could have been taken anytime in the last 40 years.
